How a solar tube well works
Panels on a ground structure near the well feed a solar pump drive, also called a solar VFD. The drive runs the pump motor, speeding it up as sunlight increases and slowing it in the morning and evening. There is usually no battery. The system stores water instead, in a tank, a pond or the field itself.
EGS supplies the Aiko panels for the array. We do not sell pump drives or pumps, so those come from your pump supplier or installer. Tell them which panel model you are using so they can match the drive's input voltage.
What drives solar tube well price in Pakistan
Pump horsepower sets most of the cost, and it follows from water depth and the flow your crops need. A bigger pump needs a bigger array. Then come the pump drive, the ground structure, the cable run to the borewell, protection devices and, for a new well, the boring itself.
The return comes from diesel you no longer burn. A diesel tube well uses fuel every hour it runs through the season. Compare your seasonal diesel spend with the cost of the panels and drive to see the payback.
Rough array size and panel price by pump
A common rule of thumb is an array about 1.3 to 1.5 times the motor's kW rating, because panels rarely give full rated output in heat, dust and low morning sun. The sizes below use that rule and are estimates only. Your pump drive maker's sizing sets the final figure.
| Pump size | Motor rating | Typical array (estimate) | Aiko panel price (PKR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 HP | 3.7 kW | 5–6 kW | Ask for today's price |
| 10 HP | 7.5 kW | 10–11 kW | Ask for today's price |
| 15 HP | 11 kW | 15–17 kW | Ask for today's price |
| 20 HP | 15 kW | 19–22 kW | Ask for today's price |
| 25 HP | 18.5 kW | 24–28 kW | Ask for today's price |

Sizing your solar tube well
Start with three numbers: the depth to water and how far it drops while pumping, the water you need each day, and the distance from the well to the field or tank. Your crop, acreage and irrigation method decide the daily water.
Then count panels. A 10 kW array is about 15 Aiko Comet panels at 690 W, or about 20 smaller panels at 500 W. Large-format panels mean fewer modules to mount and fewer connections in the field. Check the design against winter too, when shorter days, and fog in Punjab, cut the hours of pumping.
Questions to ask your pump supplier or installer
The pump side decides how much water you actually get. Ask these before you buy.
- What input voltage range does the pump drive accept, and how will the panels be strung for it?
- Does the drive protect the motor against dry running and overload when the water level drops?
- Can my existing submersible pump run on solar, or does it need replacing?
- How high will the structure stand, and how will it be anchored against wind and standing water?
- What cable size will you use for the run to the borewell?
- Which anti-theft fasteners and earthing will you fit?
Grid-connected farm buildings and net billing
Cold stores, dairy farms and processing sheds with a grid connection can run on-grid solar like any commercial building. Sungrow on-grid inverters suit daytime loads, and SigenStack storage keeps cold rooms running through outages.
Grid-connected systems fall under net billing, which replaced net metering under NEPRA's Prosumer Regulations 2026 in February 2026. Exported units are credited at a lower rate than imported ones. You or your installer file the application with your distribution company (DISCO), such as LESCO, FESCO, MEPCO, GEPCO, PESCO, HESCO, SEPCO, QESCO or K-Electric. EGS does not file it, but we provide the equipment datasheets.
